What happens when I claim for R&D?
Any company in the UK that has under 500 employees can claim for SME R&D tax relief. Claiming for R&D means that you
1. submit your CT600 Corporate Tax Return and Company Accounts with section number 650 of your CT600 filled out, or
2. make an amendment to section number 650 of your CT600 later but no later than 2 years after your financial year-end.
Is there a minimum for an R&D tax credit claim?
No, there is no minimum and we don’t cut off clients based on claim size.
How far back can I claim R&D tax credits?
The time limit is two years from the end of your accounting period. Tax credits are a Corporation Tax relief and the deadline for amending your Corporation Tax return is usually 24 months after the end of your accounting period.
Does it matter that my project is ongoing or not yet completed?
Not at all. In fact, if you attempted an R&D project and it’s in different stages that’s a good sign that you’re doing qualifying work. Moreover, if you’ve worked on a project and it was unsuccessful, that is no bad thing. If you’re unsuccessful that showcases that you are attempting a project with an uncertain outcome, which is exactly what HMRC want to incentivise and reward.
